Martin Leman was born in London, the son of a Covent Garden fruit carrier. He studied at the Worthing School of Art and later worked in advertising as a designer, illustrator and printer. In the early 1960s he decided to make painting his main occupation. A turning point in his career was a picture of a small tabby cat decorated in an interior. From this point on his long association with cats began. But he is also known for his humorous pictures of the female form. He lives and works mainly in Great Britain.
