Following the decision of the Austrian National Council in 1988 to replace the white on black license plates that had been in use since 1947 with new plates with black paint on a white background, Friedensreich Hundertwasser became active. He decided to bring his own designs into the discussion. Unfortunately, his designs for the license plates, which also included slightly modified national coats of arms, were not accepted.
