In 1987, an impressive exhibition entitled "Pictures for the Sky" took place. It was initiated by Paul Eubel, the then director of the Japanese Goethe Institute in Osaka. Renowned artists from all over the world were invited to create kites made from paper according to old Japanese tradition. The artists had the choice between different sizes and shapes.
These artistically painted kites then went on a world tour as a traveling exhibition and were flown by special teams in different locations. The first stop of the exhibition was Osaka in Japan.
To accompany the exhibition, a large-format, elaborately designed catalogue was produced that perfectly captures the beauty and aesthetics of the celestial images. The kites were ultimately to be permanently presented as a museum in a building specially designed for this purpose. Initially, they were exhibited in a converted aircraft hangar.
Unfortunately, the museum had to close its doors just a few years later. In 2021, the heirs of the late Dr. Paul Eubel handed over the entire dragon ensemble to an auction house, where it was auctioned off in aid of global disaster relief.
